Scott Cook would like to invite everyone to 'tap' one of his songs for the next Big Rock compilation album.  "If you have time, you could do me a huge favor by going by http://www.bigrockuntapped.com  and registering as a user so you can "tap" my songs for inclusion on a compilation CD that will be distributed to venues all over Canada.  I saw this thing everywhere & I'd really love to get on it, but to be considered for it, you need to be "tapped" by listeners.   Ya I know, a sorta popularity contest sorta thing.  Stupid, but I'd really like to get on this CD, and would be very grateful for your help in doing that."

Ticket Price:  $38 cabaret tables, $36 boxes and $32 theatre seats
Tickets available at the Festival Place Box Office 449-3378
or through TicketMaster

Frank Zappa's extraordinary musical legacy survives and grows with The Grande Mothers Re-Invented, a group that features original and former members of The Mother of Invention. They recently performed to rave reviews throughout Europe and The States.

There is a famous poster that has a photo of a goateed Zappa above the words “The modern day composer refuses to die”; a quote from Zappa’s childhood idol, sonic innovator Edgard Varese. Ironically, now bass player Roy Estrada is responsible for keeping Zappa’s music alive.

The bassist had a brief but extraordinary career during the 1960s and early ’70s. After helping Zappa found the original Mothers of Invention and contributing to such formative albums as “Freak Out!”, “We're Only In It for the Money”, and “Uncle Meat”, he left to join another ex-Mother, slide guitarist Lowell George, in Little Feat. Estrada then left that band to join Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band.

Estrada was with Zappa’s Mothers of Invention from 1964 to 1969, 1975-1977 and 1982. Also in Grande Mothers: Re-Invented is Napoleon Murphy Brock, who was with Zappa 1974-1984 on lead vocals, tenor saxophone, and flute; and Don Preston on vocals, piano and synthesizer from 1965-1975.

2008 is the fifteenth anniversary of the passing of Frank Zappa. Given that Zappa enjoys a fanatic following the likes of which are equaled by only a few artists; we are indeed a fortunate lot to have one of the four Canadian dates they are doing this summer be at Festival Place.

Rally to Demand Justice for Fort Chipewyan at the Alberta Legislature
Join with members of Fort Chipewyan to demand justice for their community.

Increasing numbers of the small aboriginal community of Fort Chipewyan (downstream from the Alberta Tar Sands) are being diagnosed and dying from rare cancers and other auto-immune diseases. A recent water study confirmed that the water in Fort Chipewyan had increased levels of arsenic, mercury and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and was not safe for consumption, particularly in the fish eaten by local residents.

The study further supports the Mikisew Cree's recent call for a moratorium on tar sands development.
But as stated by Councillor Russell Kaskamin of the Mikisew Cree First Nation, "The Federal and Provincial governments are continuing to issue approvals for projects despite all of the uncertainties with the true environmental effects of oilsands development.  This analysis suggests that we can no longer continue to exercise our rights to harvest foods due to the uncertainty of potential health
risks."

It is time to demand justice for the Mikisew Cree and the residents of Fort Chipewyan.

Whyte & 99th Street, Edmonton, AB
also featuring The Long Weekends, fellow Freemosan Outlaw Shayne Lazarowich from Saskatoon, local ukulele maestro Maurice Jones, funky beatnik Jesse Dee and of course the shoo-wop girls everyone's talking about these days, Jacqueline Boisvert, Megan Kemshead & Lynett McKell.  Mark my words, these lovely ladies will not only "doo-wop shoo-wop shoo-waaah", but also "ooo-waa-ooo" and even "scooby dooby, scooby doo-wop shoo-wah" their way into your hearts.  Oh yes, even the scooby doo-wop shoo-wah, I kid you not.

The party's free but I suggest you come early so you don't have to stand in line.  I'll start things off with a solo set at 8:30pm (really), followed by a few songs each from our special guests, and a
solo set from Shayne.  Then we'll get back up there with the band & kick it into high gear to take the night out.  There's no cover charge, the beer's delicious, the lines are clean, and the servers are charming... what more could you ask for?  (besides Monday off, of course.)

Saturday and Sunday, March 15 & 16 (all day)
Community Arts Showcase  at the Winspear
The showcase will represent the results of partnerships between professional artists and community groups of various kinds, many of them representing marginalized people and communities, including recent immigrants, at-risk youth, seniors, people with disabilities, aboriginal groups, gay and lesbian groups and others. David Barnet's seniors theatre group will be presenting on Saturday afternoon.  Rising Sun Theatre will be presenting a video and talkback on Sunday afternoon March 16  between 2 and 3 pm in lobby B.

All of the projects have been funded through the Cultural Capital Project and its Voices Less Heard program. Many different art forms and communities will be involved.  Attendees can sample many
perfomances, screenings,  art displays, activities for children, guest speakers from all over the world, panels, mini-symposia, and snacks!

This is a significant event because it gives visibility, in many cases for the first time,  to the large amount of art-focused community development and animation work now being done in the Edmonton area, facilitated by professional artists and providing a medium of expression for many who have not had previous access to the arts or to the mainstream public. The event showcases not only the
outstanding work of the artists, but articulates many issues which need to be of concern to mainstream society.  It will also be fun and it's free!

Please come out, and  please pass on this email and spread the word in any manner that you can.

Songs of John featuring Mark Sterling
Festival Place (Sherwood Park)
7:30 pm
Last January, Mark Sterling told us that one of his great ambitions was to do a show dedicated to the music of John Lennon. Sterling believes that in the next 50 years Lennon will come to be regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century, joining giants like Cole Porter, Oscar Hammerstein, and Stephen Sondheim.  We decided to give Sterling the chance he wanted - on December 8th he will offer his interpretations of his favourite Lennon pieces, supported by a great local band.  The reaction to Sterling’s pre-show preview music has been fabulous.  The show will
happen only once this year and it’s at Festival Place on December 8th

Tickets for all shows are available in-person at the Festival Place Box Office (Monday to Friday 9:00 am-6:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am-4:00 pm), by telephone (449-3378), online at

Jungle Tales Archives

from October 2007

Hi folks,

Welcome to the second edition of Jungle Tales.  There will be no Monkey Biz for October as I don’t have any public performances scheduled.  But, this E-news does include info on a couple of gigs that I'm doing in November.

I would like to encourage all Edmontonians to get out and vote on Monday.  A number of Brass Monkey affiliated artists have donated for a silent auction to support Lewis Cardinal in his Ward 4 campaign (more details below).  And I'm including a short list of other candidates that are sympathetic to the arts and worthy of your consideration (and support).

Last month's gigs (Collage-A-Thon at the Art Gallery of Alberta, Cortex at Latitude 53 and North of Nowhere closing party at Cosmopolitan Music Society were all lots of fun.  Many thanks to Tim Rechner, Marcus Miller and the staff of the AGA, Sydney Lancaster & Phil Jagger of Cortex, and
Lyn X and the Edmonton Small Press Association.  Tracy Kolenchuk has posted some great photos from Cortex, here:

http://www.pbase.com/tracyk/2007_09_18_cortex_at_latitude_53

If you would like me to include a community event, performance or gathering in Jungle Tales, please drop me a line before the end of the month previous to the event.  As always, if you would prefer not to receive messages of this kind, please respond with REMOVE in the subject header.

Cheers,

John

Jungle Tales Archives

from September 2007

Hi folks,

This is a follow up to my usual Monkey Biz mail out.  I often receive requests for other artists to include their next performance or project info in a Monkey Biz mail out.  In order to maintain the focus of Monkey Biz (projects in which I'm directly involved), I've decided to send out a supplementary mailing (Jungle Tales) with info on other activities that might be of interest to you.  I will also use this alternate mail out as a reminder of upcoming events and to announce any special parties...

If you'd rather not receive this mailing, but do want to continue receiving Monkey Biz, please let me know.  And, as always, if you would prefer to not receive any E-news from me, simply respond with REMOVE in the subject header.

Cheers,

John

RECORDING PROJECT : here is a message from our good friend, Sue Hodge:

SUE’S IN THE STUDIO AGAIN!!!

After several years of ‘brewing’, I have returned to the recording
studio with a new genre of original music. Nearly a decade of studying
the use of sound and music in healing, along with years of performing
every Sunday at the Centre For Spiritual Awareness has been
heart-opening and life affirming for me. It's time to share that. In a
few short months I will be delighted and excited to present ‘HeartSong’
(working title); a collection of new songs artfully crafted to bathe you
in vibrant rhythms, sweet melodies and uplifting lyrics. Featuring some
of Alberta’s finest musicians and co-produced by the wonderful Rob
Hewes, I expect this CD will garner international acclaim.

For those of you who simply enjoy listening to beautiful music, this
recording will make you happy. And for those of you who are using music
therapeutically, you will find a myriad of choices to create an
energetic lifeline to finding peace, opening the heart, accepting
transition, self love and renewed faith.

I'm about 2/3's of the way, but I require assistance to complete this
project, and I have an idea I think you will like!
