About the Sasquatch Music FestivaloSince the Summer of 1996, Brass Monkey Productions has organized an intimate concert / camping weekend in the great outdoors of Alberta. Much like its namesake, the festival moved throughout the western Canadian wilderness with events held near Nordegg, Hinton, Brazeau Reservoir, Smoky Lake and Drayton Valley, AB. In 2006, the Sasquatch Community Arts Society was established to carry on the festival's activities. Production, management and booking services continue to be handled by John Armstrong of Brass Monkey Productions.

Many thanks to all volunteers, performers, attendees and our generous sponsors !
The weather was mostly cooperative. It was hot and sunny everyday. But, we did have to shut down main stage twice due to fierce late-afternoon hail and thunder showers.
Start up on Friday night was delayed by technical difficulties with the main generator and mixing console (good thing we had two!). But, we were eventually up and running with great opening performances by Backporch Swing, Le Fuzz and the Wafer Thin Mints (gotta love the song about the Chevette). As we were running late and Current Swell had a 7 am flight out of Edmonton, FreeFlow very graciously agreed to switch spots and close out the night. Stellar performances from both bands made for a wonderful close to the first night of music. Scott Cook was the host with the most and brought much music and mirth to the proceedings.
Saturday afternoon began with a star-studded songwriter workshop from Maria Dunn, Kevin Cook, Tom Roschkov, Terry Morrison and John Gorham. The lovely and very talented Laurelle along with bassman and invaluable, volunteer sound guy, C-Note Mc'eed and brought up special guests through the afternoon. Local band, River’s Edge, treated the crowd to some fine originals and many old-time favourites. Emaline Delapaix & the Delistocracy charmed and rocked the audience before Bill Bourne & friends closed out a great afternoon of music.
Also on Saturday afternoon, Steven Johnson and Radar of Odditory Presence ran the new second stage, which has now been dubbed the “groove grotto.” The first afternoon in the grotto featured great kids' music from the Time Flies, a performance by the Vibe Tribe tribal belly dancers and a drum circle lead by Roger Duncan of One World Drum Co. And then the always popular potluck was a sensational way to wrap up the afternoon programming.
LEO .fx kicked off the evening main stage entertainment with many special guests including Zoe Francis (guitar), Nineca Mann (congas & vocals), Allyson Rogers (djembe, cowbell & electronic percussion), Dale Ladouceur (vocals), Vibe Tribe belly dancers, several dogs including the infamous McBain and a wildly spectacular poodle with dreads and an amazing storm that stopped the show for two full hours.
Saturday evening’s MC, Shamik, not only blew people’s minds with his incredible beatboxing and vocal stylings, but also managed to draw everyone back to the main stage to dance the night away under the full moon and stars (while the lightning was crackling off in the distance). One World Experience had already set up when the storm began and they treated those within listening distance to a wonderful acoustic jam. It was very fortunate that both LEO .fx and One World Experience were on stage while the storm raged as the many available didgeridoos were very useful for pushing out pockets of rain that accumulated in the tent roof.
One World’s fantastic electric set was followed by a succession of jammers lead by Shamik and a feature spot for Odditory Presence. Mile Zero Dance elected to move to the grotto stage and engage in the projections of Tim Folkmann. Also at the grotto, Prairie Tales 9 was screened in several rotations making for a fine chill area in between main stage and the trail to the river and the hut. Much hutting went on all weekend and there was often more than a hundred people down at the river.
Tacoy Ryde have been performing as a band for 39 years. They treated the Saturday night audience to lots of new originals and closed their set with a couple of classics. There are not many bands who can pull off Santana and Deep Purple with the authenticity and conviction that Tacoy Ryde bring to the stage. The Sophmore Jakes were an absolute treat. After playing their set of originals, they responded to the audience calls of encore by pulling out almost every cover song they’d ever learned and kept the party going well into the night.
Sunday main stage began with an incredible song circle featuring Kat Danser, Wendy DeMos, Paul Bromley and Cam Neufeld, who brought along the ace rhythm section of Dwayne Hyrinkiw and Thom Golub. Much jamming ensued. Afternoon hosts Melissa Majeau and Johnny Mericana performed great originals and helped to keep the afternoon flowing. Al Brant and Barry (Niz) Nighswander delivered a great set before turning over the stage to Don’t Mess with the Pony - what a band ! As the Captain Tractor Trio began, another afternoon hail and thunder shower forced us to shut down main stage for another hour. But, as soon as the rain stopped, Chris, Scott & Jason gave lively and engaging performance of originals and classic Celtic folk rock.
Meanwhile in the grotto, Steven & Radar facilitated another performance from the Vibe Tribe, sets of kids' music from Netti Spaghetti & the inimitable Tippy Agogo and more inspiring spoken word from Odditory Presence. In various parts of the site, Jimmy Golden helped kids and adults alike to explore the creativity with visual art projects and Gary Lee lent some a literary component to the Gathering his poetry workshop.
Parastra once again brought amazing site decoration. Owlspotted painted many people, wonderfully. Mary Rankin’s massage chair was almost never empty. Adrian Bolli brought a wonderful collection of wearable art as the first official vendor to ever attend Sasquatch. Festival Chasers video crew could always be found conducting interviews and capturing performances. And everyone added to the festivities with their dancing, hula hooping, campfire guitar playing, singing and sharing. A great time was had by all.
As always, Mike Bradford of MB Productions provided excellent sound !
The MacIntosh family who very generously provide the site were the greatest hosts imaginable. Every volunteer crew did an outstanding job. And every person on site did a great job of picking up after themselves and their dogs. Cooperation and collaboration all around made this the best Sasquatch Gathering ever !
Cheers,
